After their encounter with the English, Capitaine Le Blanc’s men found themselves in a pickle. While they had escaped unhurt, and with a clear victory over their opponents, they had also barely been able to get enough coin together to cover their costs, and on top of that, they had come across a new mouth to feed: they could not leave Father Fleury in the ruins of the city or mistreat him, and had taken him in. While the good father would not be expected to be man of violence, he could at least secure plunder and bring God’s favour to the group. But they were still at a loss for what to do to cover their increased expenses. Until, that is, Branoc, the old flibustier, heard a rumour of a mill on the edge of town where gold had been left, panned and ready, in the chaos of the earthquake. The buccaneers made their way there, but as they were trying to figure out how to bring it all back to their base, they were surprised and set upon by the *kapers* under the Dutch captain Drieuw. ![[jun_13 - 1.png]] Capitaine Le Blanc and his quartermaster Icare headed out one door, Branoc and Chorbe out the other way, and the *boucanier* Filou stayed with Father Fleury on the roof. The two old flibustiers met a Dutch landsman and their cabin boy (Christiaan, as they would later hear) coming up from behind, and gave the cabin boy a knock on the head and dispatched the landsman in a bloody melee. ![[jun_13 - 3.png]] ![[jun_13 - 5.png]] On the other side of the building, Filou discovered that the Dutch captain Drieuw was squirrelly, and despite repeatedly finding clear avenues to shoot, could not land a hit. The Dutch had two groups there, one to guard the gold and another to block the movement of the French. Capitaine Le Blanc and Icare charged in, and while Icare was able to dispatch the Dutch lieutenant with his axes before the man’s support could arrive, that support arrived in the form of Jip, a mad Dutchman wielding his own pair of axes. ![[jun_13 - 2.png]] Capitaine Le Blanc was engaged against a Dutch landsman in a much more civilized fight, his sword against the Dutch dirk, but found himself fighting for his life, having under-estimated the man. Seeing his lieutenant fall, captain Drieuw ducked back to support his boarding specialist and stop Icare, but this was Filou’s chance, and his musket ball flew true, killing the Dutch captain. At this point, all their officers down, the Dutch fled, but took the best part of the gold with them. ![[jun_13 - 4.png]] Still, the French would eat well tonight.
